Darley prevailed 40-32 over the Cougars, who finished in last place on the 2015 ladder.

Darley sported a completely new lineup for the clash, with just two players in Saturday’s game featuring in the Devils’ 2015 side which finished sixth.

Darley coach Marika Barnes said despite coming away with the points the side would need to be better going into the future.

“We will need to be stronger, but for a first game and a brand new side it was good,” Barnes said.

“They’re all still getting used to each other.”

The Devils will have a week off through the bye next week, before taking on 2015 cellar dwellersBacchus Marsh in round two.

“We won’t know how we really shape up until we face the Ballarat teams,” Barnes said.
