Barooga ready to fire again

WATERHOUSE owner-trainer Ian Abraham hopes a little freshen up will help his smart mare Barooga Minnie return to the winners’ list in her heat of the $30,000 Granny Smith Stakes at Devonport on Monday night.

Barooga Minnie, last season’s star three-year-old filly, hasn’t raced since finishing unplaced against male rivals at Mowbray on March 13.

“In hindsight I probably shouldn’t have backed her up in that race,” Abraham said.

“It was her third run in three weeks and, up against some good male horses, she found it a bit tough.

“So I’ve basically just freshened her up since then.

“I’ve given her a fair bit of beach work and she’s trimmed up.”

Barooga Minnie had her first run as a four-year-old at Mowbray on February 28 when third to Sammy Seelster and Williamlee.

“She’d had a pretty long spell and was a bit under-done so I wasn’t really expecting a lot,” Abraham said.

“It was no surprise when she got the stitch a bit towards the finish.

“But then she came out and won well at Devonport after drawing outside the second row.”

Abraham expects Barooga Minnie to be “up in the firing line” from a good draw (barrier 2) on Monday night.

“It’s a good little race but she won’t be too far away,” the trainer said.

“She’s a very honest little thing.”

Abraham rates Fucienne and Sheas Delight as his two main dangers.

Longford trainer Todd Rattray has a strong hand in the other Granny Smith heat with polemarker Freyde and Kyleasha looking the two key runners.

With insufficient acceptors for two heats, the $30,000 Raider Stakes contenders will go around in a prelude where the Hillier brothers, Rohan and Troy, look likely to fight out the finish with Jerrys Jet and Four Ex Dan.

Jerrys Jet has won 14 of his 17 starts and was unplaced for the first time in his life when he missed the start badly in a heat of the Easter Cup at Mowbray on March 13.

Four Ex Dan has won seven of his 13 starts and never been unplaced.

Both four-year-olds are unbeaten on the Devonport track which hosts the two feature finals on April 24.
